Examples: Stakeholder perception audits

Baseline Community Assessment (BCA): Mining Industry

Conducted for Rio Tinto Alcan’s Coega Aluminium Smelter in the Eastern Cape, the BCA included a household survey among 3,000 Motherwell households that profiled the community in terms of socio-economic indicators, as well as perceptions and expectations of business in general, and the Coega Smelter in particular. In addition, our BCA included an overview of business in the greater Motherwell area, and an HIV/Aids situation analysis in the Nelson Mandela Metropole.

Social Landscape Assessment (SLA) and Key Stakeholder profiling: Mining Industry

We conducted a SLA for a mining project in its exploration stage. The assessment included social structures, culture and lifestyle, places of interest and the prominence of, and intelligence on, hosting and neighbouring communities. The SLA outlined risks such as unmarked graves AND places of worship and provided actionable intelligence for mine development and future engagement.

Stakeholder Profiling and Community Perception survey: Mining Industry

On completion of Wesizwe Platinum’s Bankable Feasibility Study, we conducted a stakeholder profiling and perception survey in the Ledig complex to map stakeholders and their issues ahead of mine construction in the village. We identified issues impacting the company’s relationship with the community. These will be tracked in an annual relationship measurement exercise.

Stakeholder Perception Audit: Mining Industry

A research study commissioned by Lonmin Platinum to define its social development role and determine exactly how different stakeholders experience their interaction with the company. We initially conducted this comprehensive survey among a diverse group of stakeholders: government (national, provincial and local), the media, trade union leaders, competitors, opinion leaders in the mining industry, service providers (contractors), traditional leaders and eight local (neighbouring) communities. Over the next four years we conducted the perception audit at the end of each financial year among community stakeholders such as ward councillors, health workers and educators. It focused on the impact the company's actions have on its relationship with these stakeholders.
